Roof Replacement in Howell, Michigan
Roof Replacement
Atlas StormMaster Copper Canyon — 4908 Mack Road, Howell
This roof replacement on Mack Road in Howell came to us the straightforward way. The homeowner, Steve, called in June describing a roof that had clearly run its course. He mentioned visible asphalt showing through where the granules had worn away, and when our estimator Scott got up there, he confirmed it. The sunny side had lost roughly 40 percent of its surface granules and the shingles were cracking. This wasn't a borderline call. The roof was done, and a full replacement was the right move.
The job came in at 30 squares, which lines up with the 2,632 square foot roof size. We tore off the existing layer down to the deck, inspected the wood substrate, and once we had a clean surface to work with, we got into the installation. Howell sits in Livingston County, and out here on Mack Road not far from Grand River Avenue, you're dealing with real Michigan winters. That means ice and water shield isn't something you cut corners on. We ran six rolls of Atlas WeatherMaster ice and water shield along the eaves and extended coverage around the two pipe penetrations, the B vent, and any wall intersections. On top of that went two rolls of Summit 60 synthetic underlayment, run continuously from the ice and water shield all the way up to the ridge and fastened with plastic cap nails per manufacturer specs.
Drip edge goes on before underlayment at the eaves and over it at the rakes. We installed 28 pieces of premium drip edge around the perimeter. Step flashing and wall flashing were installed where the roof meets any vertical surfaces. Both pipe penetrations got new pipe boots and pipe boot covers. The B vent was reflashed and sealed. Four tubes of Solar Seal were used to bed and seal the flashing details throughout. These are the spots where roofs fail when they're done sloppily, so we do them right.
For ventilation, we installed 24 units of TruRidge all-weather ridge vent spanning 96 linear feet across the peak, hand nailed in place. That's a continuous exhaust channel running the full length of the ridge, working with the existing soffit intake to move air through the attic. Balanced ventilation keeps heat and moisture from accumulating up there, which matters for both the roof deck and the shingles above it.
The shingles are Atlas StormMaster in Copper Canyon, 80 bundles covering the field, which works out to just under 27 squares. Hip and ridge caps are Atlas StormMaster Hip and Ridge shingles, 4 bundles. Starter strip went in along all eaves and rakes before the field shingles. StormMaster is Atlas's impact-rated line, built with a reinforced mat and a heavier granule layer than standard architectural shingles. Copper Canyon is a warm blend of brown and amber tones that reads well on a lot of Michigan home styles. Steve looked at four color samples before making his choice, and this one suited the house.
Roofing Army completed the job with a full magnetic nail sweep of the property and a final walkthrough. Permit fees, dumpster rental, materials, and labor were all included in the quote with no surprises at the end. If you're in the Howell area and your roof is showing the same kind of wear Steve described, granules thinning out, asphalt showing through, shingles going brittle on the south face, that's the roof telling you it's time. A Howell roof replacement like this one is a straightforward process when you go in with a solid plan and the right materials.
