How to Choose a Shingle Color for Your Roof

By Aaron Scott|9 min read|

The fastest way to choose a shingle color is to stop staring at a two-inch manufacturer chip and look at real installed roofs instead, then check whether your subdivision or historic district has to approve the color before you commit. Match the color family to your brick, siding, and trim, and confirm the drip edge and any exposed metal will coordinate rather than clash. Atlas Black Shadow, our most requested color, is already on 12 of the roofs we have published with photos and a real price.

What Shingle Colors Do We Actually Install Most in Michigan?

Every quote we write offers five options at different price points, so color questions come up constantly. Across our calls this year, 165 are specifically about shingle color, and 76 homeowners ask to see a physical sample before deciding. That is a real signal that nobody wants to commit to a roof color from a tiny chip held up against aluminum siding in bright sun.

So instead of guessing, look at what Southeast Michigan homeowners have actually chosen. We publish every completed roof with its real price and photos in our job gallery, and we group every one of those roofs by manufacturer and color on our shingle colors page, built entirely from real installs, not a rendering. Of the 47 roofs published there, 42 are Atlas, 4 are CertainTeed, and 1 is Tilcor stone-coated metal.

Note that "Weathered Wood" is not one single color here. Atlas and CertainTeed each sell their own shingle line under that name, and they are not identical side by side, so 7 of our published roofs carry a Weathered Wood shingle, but they are two different products from two different manufacturers. The same overlap happens with "Pewter": our Atlas Pewter is a different shingle than GAF's Pewter Gray line. Always confirm the manufacturer and the exact line name, not just the color word, when you compare a sample to a photo.

The cover photo on this page is the 2,274 sq ft roof we installed at 2226 Judy Lane in Shelby Township in Atlas Black Shadow, the single most requested color on our list. You can see the full project, including the price, in the job gallery.

How Do I Match a Shingle Color to My House?

The general rule holds up well in practice: pull your shingle color from your brick, stone, or siding, not from the color you happen to like best in a showroom. A few starting points we give customers during the estimate walkthrough:

  • Red or orange brick usually pairs well with charcoal, black, or dark brown shingles, which keep the brick as the visual focal point instead of competing with it.
  • Tan, beige, or gray brick and stone gives you the most flexibility. Pewter, gray, and warm brown blends all read well against neutral masonry.
  • Vinyl or fiber cement siding is easier to change later than brick, so you have more room to go lighter or add contrast if you plan to repaint or re-side eventually.
  • Trim, shutters, and the front door should echo one tone in the shingle blend, since most architectural shingles are a blend of two to four granule colors, not one flat shade.
  • Walk your own street before you decide. A color that looks great on a sample board can look completely different lined up next to the roofs your neighbors already chose.

If you want to compare two specific manufacturer lines in detail, including full color names, we have written up Atlas Pinnacle vs. GAF Timberline HDZ vs. CertainTeed Landmark and Owens Corning Duration vs. GAF Timberline HDZ, both written by the crew that installs all of them.

Does My HOA or Historic District Have to Approve the Color?

Sometimes, and it is worth checking before you fall in love with a specific shingle. Many Michigan subdivisions carry deed restrictions that require architectural committee sign-off on exterior changes, and some historic districts go further and review the specific shingle product and color, not just the general style.

The clearest example in our own service area is downtown Northville. The city's historic district, designated in 1974 and covering roughly 73 buildings, requires Historic District Commission approval before a reroof, including review of the exact shingle product and color you plan to install. The HDC application runs $100 and the commission meets the third Wednesday of each month, so that timeline has to be built into the project schedule. Skipping the review carries a $500 penalty on top of the standard permit fees. We cover the broader permit process, including that penalty, in our Michigan roof permit guide.

Other communities we serve handle it similarly. The Village of Clarkston's Historic District requires Historic District Commission approval for exterior changes, including roofing, regardless of whether a building permit is otherwise needed. Nearly all of Pleasant Ridge sits within a federally designated historic district, and its Planning and City Commission has adopted design standards for exterior modifications that favor material choices complementing the home's period architecture. None of this means you are locked into one color, but it does mean a quick call to your city or your HOA's architectural committee belongs at the start of the process, not after you have already ordered shingles.

What About the Drip Edge, Fascia, and Gutters?

A shingle color decision is not finished until the trim around it is accounted for. Drip edge, the metal strip along the roof's edges, is typically ordered to match or closely complement the new shingle color rather than the old fascia color, since it is the one piece of metal flashing that sits directly next to the shingles on every elevation. If your fascia boards are painted a contrasting color on purpose, say it out loud during the estimate so the drip edge gets ordered to match the trim instead.

Gutters are a separate decision entirely, and an important one: Roofing Army does not install, size, or sell gutters or gutter guards. That work goes to our referral partner, Ackerman Seamless Gutters, who can color-match seamless aluminum gutters to your new roof, siding, or trim on site. You can see how that handoff works on our referral partners page. A dark charcoal roof with a mismatched off-white gutter is one of the most common after-the-fact regrets we hear about, so it is worth deciding gutter color at the same time as shingle color, not months later.

Does a Darker Roof Make an Attic Hotter?

A little, but less than most homeowners expect once proper ventilation is in place. Dark shingles absorb more solar radiation than light ones, which is real physics, but attic temperature is driven far more by intake and exhaust ventilation than by shingle color on a properly built roof. A dark roof with balanced soffit intake and ridge exhaust will usually run cooler than a light roof with blocked or undersized vents. Some manufacturer lines do offer a reflective option for hot climates: Owens Corning's Shasta White, for example, meets ENERGY STAR solar reflectance requirements, a detail we cover in our Owens Corning vs. GAF color comparison. If ventilation is a concern on your specific roof regardless of the color you pick, every estimate we write includes a ventilation analysis as part of the inspection, not as an upsell afterward.

How Can I See Samples Before I Decide?

Three ways, and we recommend using more than one. First, ask for physical shingle samples during your estimate walkthrough; every manufacturer we install, Atlas, CertainTeed, GAF, Owens Corning, and Tilcor, provides real sample chips, not just a printed card. Second, walk or drive a street with roofs already installed in the color you are considering, which is exactly what our shingle colors page lets you do from your phone, organized by manufacturer and color with the city and photos for every roof. Third, get it in writing. We give every customer five quotes at different price points, and the exact shingle brand, line, and color should be spelled out on each one, not just "architectural shingles." Our guide on what should be in a roof replacement quote walks through every line item a complete quote needs, color included.

Before You Lock In a Color

  • Check your HOA or historic district first. A quick call before you choose beats a denied application after you have ordered material.
  • Confirm the exact manufacturer and line, not just the color name. Atlas Pewter, GAF Pewter Gray, and CertainTeed's palette are all different products.
  • Pull the color from your brick or siding, not from the sample you like best in isolation.
  • Decide gutter color at the same time, even though it is a separate purchase through a referral partner.
  • Get the brand, line, and color written into your quote before any work starts.

A Color Decision Backed by Real Roofs, Not a Catalog

I am a licensed Michigan residential builder, and I built Roofing Army around publishing what other roofers hide: real prices, real photos, and now every shingle color we have actually installed on a real house. A project manager is on site for every job we run, we never take a deposit, and your quote will spell out the exact brand, line, and color before a single shingle is ordered. Browse the full shingle colors gallery, or schedule a free inspection and get five written quotes at different price points, each with the color spelled out in writing. Learn more on our roof replacement page, or see current financing options if the timing is tight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most popular shingle color in Michigan?

Among the roofs we have published with real prices and photos, Atlas Black Shadow is the single most requested color, installed on 12 of our 47 published roofs. Atlas Pewter follows at 9, Weathered Wood (across both the Atlas and CertainTeed lines) at 7, and Atlas Burnt Hickory at 6. You can browse every color on real homes on our shingle colors page.

Do I need HOA or historic district approval for my shingle color?

It depends on where you live. Many subdivisions have deed restrictions requiring architectural committee approval for exterior changes, and some historic districts go further. Downtown Northville's Historic District Commission, for example, specifically reviews the shingle product and color before approving a reroof, with a $100 application fee and a $500 penalty for skipping it. Check with your HOA or city before you choose a color.

Should my drip edge match my new shingles or my old fascia?

Drip edge is typically ordered to match or complement the new shingle color, since it sits directly against the shingles on every roof edge. If your fascia is painted a specific trim color on purpose, mention it during your estimate so the drip edge gets ordered to match the trim instead of the shingles.

Does Roofing Army install gutters to match the new roof color?

No. Gutters and gutter guards are handled by our referral partner, Ackerman Seamless Gutters, who can color-match seamless aluminum gutters to your new roof or trim on site. We coordinate the handoff, but we do not install, size, or sell gutters ourselves.

Does a dark roof make the attic hotter in the summer?

Dark shingles absorb more heat than light ones, but attic temperature is driven far more by ventilation than by color on a properly built roof. A dark roof with balanced intake and exhaust ventilation typically runs cooler than a light roof with blocked vents. Every estimate we write includes a ventilation analysis regardless of the color you choose.
