Atlas Pinnacle Pristine, GAF Timberline HDZ and CertainTeed Landmark are the three architectural shingles we install most in Southeast Michigan, and on a typical home they are within a few hundred dollars of each other installed. The real differences are in the wind warranty terms, how long the algae protection is backed, how forgiving the nailing zone is, and what the upgraded system warranty costs you in required accessories. This is how we explain the three to homeowners at the kitchen table, written by Aaron Scott, licensed Michigan residential builder and owner of Roofing Army.
Which shingle do we install most, and why?
Atlas Pinnacle Pristine, by a wide margin. Of the 47 projects published in our job gallery at the time of writing, 42 are Atlas and 4 are CertainTeed Landmark or Landmark Pro. We are an Atlas Pro+ Diamond contractor, so we can register the full Atlas Signature Select system warranty, and the Scotchgard Protector algae coverage is the strongest of the three for a state where north-facing slopes and tree cover turn roofs black in ten years. That said, we quote GAF and CertainTeed every week when a homeowner asks for them, and there are good reasons to pick either. None of the three is a mistake. Picking any of them over a 3-tab is the decision that matters (see our 3-tab vs architectural comparison).
How do the wind warranties compare?
Every wind number below comes from the manufacturer's own literature, and every one of them has a condition attached. Wind coverage on an asphalt roof is only as good as the nailing, which is why the nailing zone section matters just as much.
- Atlas Pinnacle Pristine: Atlas warrants the shingle against wind gusts up to 130 mph with a standard four-nail installation. Atlas's warranty schedule lists that wind coverage as lasting five years from installation.
- GAF Timberline HDZ: GAF's WindProven Limited Wind Warranty has no maximum wind speed, and it runs 15 years, but only when the LayerLock shingles are installed with four qualifying GAF accessories: starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge cap shingles, and either leak barrier or attic ventilation. GAF states the warranty is available no matter who installs the roof.
- CertainTeed Landmark: CertainTeed lists a 15-year, 110 mph wind-resistance warranty as standard, with an upgrade to 160 mph available when CertainTeed starter and CertainTeed hip and ridge shingles are used.
Our read: the GAF and CertainTeed "no limit" and "160 mph" numbers only exist when you buy the matching accessories. The Atlas 130 mph figure is the standard warranty with four nails and nothing extra. On the roofs in our gallery the starter and ridge cap match the shingle brand (the Sherwood Lane job below, for example, used CertainTeed SwiftStart starter under Landmark Pro), so the upgraded wind coverage is in reach whichever brand you pick. Ask any contractor quoting HDZ or Landmark whether their price includes the accessories that unlock the wind warranty they are describing.
Which shingle has the best algae warranty in Michigan?
Black streaking is not a cosmetic footnote here. Shaded lots in Rochester Hills, Oxford and the lake communities grow blue-green algae on any north slope, and the streaks show up years before the roof is worn out.
- Atlas Pinnacle Pristine: uses 3M Scotchgard Protector, which Atlas describes as copper-containing granules with a porous ceramic coating that releases copper ions slowly, blended at a minimum of 10 percent. Atlas backs it with a Lifetime Algae Resistance Limited Warranty when the roof is finished with Atlas hip and ridge shingles that also carry Scotchgard Protector.
- GAF Timberline HDZ: StainGuard Plus, which GAF backs with a 25-year limited warranty against blue-green algae discoloration, non-prorated for the first 10 years, on StainGuard Plus labeled shingles, ridge cap and starter.
- CertainTeed Landmark: StreakFighter, with a 25-year algae-resistance warranty on Landmark and 30 years on Landmark Pro per CertainTeed's product pages.
Lifetime versus 25 or 30 years is the single clearest separation between the three products, and it is the main reason Pinnacle Pristine is our default recommendation.
How do the nailing zones differ?
A wide, clearly marked nailing zone is not marketing fluff. Nails driven above or below the common bond of a laminated shingle are the number one cause of blow-offs we see on roofs installed by other companies, and every manufacturer voids wind coverage for misplaced nails.
- Atlas: HP42 technology with a 1.5-inch Sweet Spot nailing area and a double FASTAC sealant line, per Atlas.
- GAF: LayerLock technology mechanically fuses the two layers of the common bond with roughly 19 punches per shingle, which lets GAF open up the StrikeZone nailing area. GAF states it is up to 600 percent larger than on the old Timberline HD and requires a minimum of four nails per shingle.
- CertainTeed: NailTrak, which CertainTeed describes as three separately defined lines, a large area for normal slopes and a smaller area for extreme steep-slope work.
Honest take from the roof: the GAF StrikeZone is the most forgiving target for a gun nailer, which is why crews like it. Atlas and CertainTeed are both easy to hit correctly if the crew is paying attention. We nail every shingle to the manufacturer's pattern regardless of brand, and our 50-year workmanship warranty covers the installation on all three (details on our warranty page).
What are the warranty tiers, and what do they require?
All three carry a lifetime limited warranty on the shingle itself for the original owner. The differences are in the enhanced system warranties, which need the manufacturer's accessories and, in some cases, a credentialed installer.
- Atlas Signature Select: Atlas's warranty options page lists Pinnacle Pristine's Premium Protection Period at 10 years standard and 20 years with a registered Signature Select system (Atlas underlayment, ice and water, starter, shingles, ventilation and hip and ridge). The Premium Protection Period covers non-prorated labor and materials, tear-off and disposal, and is transferable.
- GAF System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge: the upper tiers require a GAF certified contractor. GAF states that Golden Pledge non-prorated misapplication coverage runs 25 or 30 years depending on the shingle. The WindProven and StainGuard Plus coverage described above comes with the product and accessories, not the tier.
- CertainTeed SureStart and SureStart PLUS: Landmark includes 10-year SureStart protection standard. SureStart PLUS 3-Star, 4-Star and 5-Star coverage extends non-prorated coverage up to 50 years and adds CertainTeed-backed workmanship coverage at the 4-Star and 5-Star levels, available only through a CertainTeed credentialed contractor.
What does each shingle cost installed in Michigan?
These are published prices from our gallery, not estimates. Every job includes tear-off, decking inspection, 6 feet of ice and water shield at the eaves, synthetic underlayment fastened with cap nails, new flashing, ventilation and a project manager on site.

Two things jump out. First, the CertainTeed jobs are not more expensive per square foot than the Atlas jobs; the Rochester Hills Landmark Pro roof included 57 sheets of replacement decking and the Lake Orion Landmark roof added two skylights, which is what moved those numbers, not the shingle. Second, we have not published a GAF Timberline HDZ job yet. Which one should you choose?
- Pick Atlas Pinnacle Pristine if algae streaking is your biggest worry, or you want the strongest standard wind coverage without buying add-ons. It is also what we can back with the Signature Select system warranty as a Pro+ Diamond contractor.
- Pick GAF Timberline HDZ if you want the widest nailing zone and a wind warranty with no speed cap, and you are fine with the four required GAF accessories being part of the price.
- Pick CertainTeed Landmark or Landmark Pro if you like the CertainTeed color palette (Weathered Wood and Espresso are the ones we get asked for most), or you want the 30-year StreakFighter coverage on the Pro.

Our published Atlas jobs run from $11,904 for a 1,440 square foot Oxford roof to $16,405 for a 2,646 square foot Lake Orion roof; our published CertainTeed Landmark jobs sit in the same band. Roof size, decking repairs, skylights and pitch move the price far more than the shingle brand.
Do I need the manufacturer's accessories to get the full warranty?
For the enhanced coverage, yes. GAF's WindProven warranty requires four qualifying GAF accessories, CertainTeed's 160 mph upgrade requires CertainTeed starter and hip and ridge, and Atlas's Signature Select system requires Atlas underlayment, ice and water, starter, ventilation and hip and ridge. We quote the matching manufacturer starter and ridge cap with each shingle so the upgraded coverage is available whichever brand you choose.
What warranty covers the installation itself?
The manufacturer covers the shingle. The contractor covers the workmanship, and that is where most roofs actually fail. Roofing Army backs every full replacement with a 50-year workmanship warranty on top of the Atlas, GAF or CertainTeed material warranty.
