Exterior paint is the first thing a buyer or a neighbor sees, and prep work is where cheap painters cut corners. We pulled every painting company Google lists in Ferndale, MI, checked which ones actually have an address in town, read their reviews, and went through their websites to build this list.
How we chose this list: Painting companies are sorted by Google rating weighted by review count. Companies based in Ferndale come first, and where the city has fewer than five we added the nearest well-reviewed companies and say where they are based. The Exterior Painters is ranked first because it is where we send our own customers; see the disclosure below. This list is updated for 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a painting company based in Ferndale?
Yes. Pro Painters LTD is based in Ferndale and lists interior, exterior, cabinet and historic restoration work. Two other painters on this list are just over the city line: Referral Painting Service in Hazel Park and Elegance Painting Inc in Royal Oak. Visual Paint is based in Southfield, about 3.5 miles away. The Exterior Painters works from offices in Rochester Hills and Plymouth and serves Metro Detroit.
When is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in Michigan?
Late spring through early fall is the usual window in Michigan. Exterior paint needs a dry surface and mild temperatures to cure, so check the minimum temperature on the paint label and avoid days with rain in the forecast or heavy morning dew. Spring rain and early fall frost can shorten the season. Painters often book up for summer, so ask for an estimate in winter or early spring if you want a slot during the warm months.
Do house painters need a license in Michigan?
Yes, for most residential jobs. In Michigan, painting and decorating on a residential structure is a licensed trade. Contractors need a residential builder or maintenance and alteration license from LARA for jobs over $600. Ask for the license number before you sign, and ask for proof of insurance too. Of the companies listed here, The Exterior Painters and Visual Paint say on their websites that they are licensed and insured.
Does Roofing Army do painting?
No. Roofing Army does roofing only. For exterior painting, siding and wood replacement, Roofing Army sends its own customers to The Exterior Painters, which is run by the brother of Roofing Army's owner. If you are planning exterior work on a Ferndale home, it can make sense to check the roof at the same time. Roofing Army inspects roofs for free in Ferndale.
