How Far Out Are Roofers Booked in Michigan?

By Aaron Scott|7 min read|

There is no single lead time every roofer in Michigan quotes, because it changes by month. On our own calls this year, 139 homeowners asked specifically how far out we are booked, and 57 of those calls landed in September alone. The honest answer: expect the shortest wait in January and February, and the longest around March, April, and September.

I am Aaron Scott, licensed Michigan residential builder and owner of Roofing Army. We get asked this question on nearly every call before a job is even booked, right alongside price, so instead of a marketing guess we pulled the real numbers from our own 2026 call and quote data to answer it honestly.

How Far Out Are Roofers Booked in Michigan Right Now?

We checked, and no roofing company we found, here or anywhere else, publishes a real number for this. That is because there is not one number. A crew's schedule depends on the season, the backlog from the last storm, and how many jobs are already on the board. What we can show you instead is the actual shape of demand across a Michigan year, pulled from 836 opportunities we worked between December 2025 and September 2026.

Month (2026) New inquiries
January19
February39
March90
April140
May74
June67
July96
August98
September210 (partial month)

January gets roughly a tenth of the calls April does. If your roof can wait and you book in deep winter, you are calling during the quietest stretch of the year. Call in April or September, and you are in line behind everyone else who had the same idea.

Which Months Are Hardest to Get on a Roofer's Schedule in Michigan?

Two different things drive the two spikes in that table, and they are worth telling apart. The April number (140 inquiries) is the ordinary spring rush: snow is gone, homeowners can finally see winter's damage on the roof, and everyone wants it handled before summer plans start. The September number (210, and that is a partial month) is storm-driven. A single wind and hail event across Oakland and Lapeer counties pushed inquiries past every other month on the board; see our Oakland County wind storm and Lapeer County hail storm write-ups for what that specific storm did. The lesson either way is the same: a storm anywhere in our service area tightens scheduling everywhere in it, because the same crews and the same material suppliers serve the whole region.

March already running at 90 inquiries, well above the January and February baseline, tells you the spring rush starts earlier than most homeowners expect. If you are planning to replace a roof next spring, calling in February instead of April puts you ahead of that curve.

How Fast Does the Process Move Once You Call?

The booking wait is one clock. The process clock, once you actually call, is a separate and faster one, and it does not change much by season. Across every opportunity we worked this year, the median time from your first call to a completed inspection is 3.2 days, and we send a written quote the same day as the inspection in most cases. We cover what that inspection actually includes in our free roof inspection guide.

What takes longer is the decision after the quote is in your hands. The median time from quote sent to quote accepted is 6.8 days, with the middle half of homeowners deciding somewhere between 2.7 and 18 days. That is normal: most people are comparing more than one bid, checking financing, or just living with a number for a few days before committing. If you want to compress that window, our guide on how to compare roofing quotes walks through what to check line by line so you are not re-reading the same proposal for two weeks.

Is Spring or Fall a Better Time to Schedule a Roof Replacement in Michigan?

General roofing advice usually points to spring and fall for mild installation weather, and that is reasonable advice almost anywhere. Our own Michigan numbers add a sharper edge to it. Spring here is not uniformly slow, April is one of the two busiest months we track, so "spring is a quiet season" is not quite true locally. Early summer, June in particular, is actually one of our calmer stretches, between the spring rush and the late-summer storm season. If mild weather and lighter scheduling both matter to you, June and early July are a better target than the textbook spring window.

Can You Get on the Schedule for a Winter Roof Replacement in Michigan?

Yes, and the data backs up why it is also the easiest time to book. January and February are our quietest months for new inquiries, which means more open slots on the schedule. The tradeoff is weather, not availability: shingles rely on a self-sealing strip that bonds with sun and warmth, so cold-weather installs follow the manufacturer's hand-sealing guidance and some days the crew simply waits for a dry, above-freezing window. We cover exactly what we can and cannot do on a winter roof, including our winter install standards, in our winter roof prep guide.

Once You Book, How Long Does the Roof Itself Take?

Do not confuse the scheduling wait with the job length, they are two different numbers. A straightforward single-story roof is usually a one-day job for our crews once work actually starts; a larger or more complex roofline can run two days. Weather and what the crew finds once the old shingles come off, like rotted decking, are the usual reasons a job runs longer. Our roof replacement day guide covers what actually happens hour by hour once your crew is on site.

How to Avoid the Longest Waits

  • Book the inspection as soon as you notice a problem. Granule loss, a soft spot, or a roof past 20 years old will not get cheaper or faster to schedule by waiting until it leaks.
  • Target January, February, or June if your timeline is flexible. Those are our lightest months for new inquiries, based on this year's numbers.
  • Expect a slower schedule for a few weeks after any named regional storm, even if your own roof was untouched, since the same crews are absorbing storm-driven demand across the whole service area.
  • Have your decision-making ready before the quote arrives. Know your budget range and whether financing is part of the plan, so the 6.8 day median decision window does not stretch into weeks.
  • A no-deposit policy means waiting to commit costs you nothing. We do not ask for money to hold a date, so there is no financial downside to getting multiple quotes before you decide.

Get an Honest Timeline for Your Roof

We would rather tell you the real demand curve than a made-up "book six weeks out" number that is not true in every month. Call in the quiet season and you will likely move faster than you expect. Call right after a storm or in the spring rush and plan for a longer wait, with good reason: a lot of your neighbors had the same idea. We serve Southeast Michigan from offices in Oxford, Ferndale, and Rochester Hills. Frequently Asked Questions

How far out are roofers typically booked in Michigan?

There is no fixed number, it depends heavily on the month. Based on our own 2026 data, January and February see our fewest new inquiries (19 and 39), while April and September are our busiest (140 and a storm-driven 210). Calling during a quiet month generally means a shorter wait to get on the schedule than calling during the spring rush or right after a regional storm.

What is the busiest time of year to schedule a roof replacement in Michigan?

April is our busiest ordinary month, as homeowners address winter damage once the snow clears. Storms can spike demand even higher outside that pattern; a September 2026 wind and hail event across Oakland and Lapeer counties pushed that month to 210 new inquiries, more than any other month we tracked this year.

Is it cheaper or easier to replace a roof in the off-season?

Easier to schedule, yes. January and February are our lightest months for new inquiries, which generally means more open slots. We do not publish off-season discounts, so ask any contractor directly whether winter pricing differs from their peak-season pricing rather than assuming it does.

Can a roof be replaced in the winter in Michigan?

Yes, on dry days above freezing, following the shingle manufacturer's cold-weather installation guidance, which can include hand-sealing. A crew will not walk a snow or ice covered roof, so winter schedules can shift around weather more than warm-season schedules do. Our winter roof prep guide covers exactly what we can and cannot do in cold weather.

How long does it take to get a quote once you call a roofer?

On our calls this year, the median time from your first call to a completed inspection was 3.2 days, and we send a written quote the same day as the inspection in most cases. The longer clock is the decision afterward: homeowners take a median of 6.8 days from quote to acceptance, with the middle half deciding somewhere between about 3 and 18 days.
