Can You Replace a Roof in Winter in Michigan?

By Aaron Scott|8 min read|

Yes. A roof can be replaced in a Michigan winter, and we do it regularly. What changes is not whether the job gets done, but how: shingles get handled and sealed differently below about 40°F, following the manufacturer's cold-weather instructions, and a crew will not walk a roof covered in snow or ice. A sound winter install is just as durable as one done in July, as long as the contractor follows the actual cold-weather process instead of skipping steps to save time.

I am Aaron Scott, licensed Michigan residential builder and owner of Roofing Army. We run crews year round out of Oxford, Ferndale, Rochester Hills, Plymouth, and Jenison, and a real share of our tear-offs happen in months a lot of homeowners assume are off limits. Here is exactly what changes about a roof replacement once the temperature drops, based on the shingle manufacturers' own published cold-weather instructions and the standards our crews work to.

Can You Replace a Roof in Winter in Michigan?

Yes, on the days the weather allows it. There is no Michigan Residential Code rule, and no universal industry rule, that bars shingle installation below a set temperature. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) gives no fixed cutoff at all; its guidance is that shingles get less flexible as the temperature drops, so you install at a temperature where they can still be handled without cracking, and you check the specific manufacturer's instructions for the exact number. The real constraint in winter is not structural, it is the shingle's self-sealing strip, which needs warmth from the sun to bond the tabs together. Below a certain temperature, that strip will not activate on its own, so installers replace it with hand sealing, covered below.

What Temperature Is Too Cold to Install a Roof?

It depends on the brand, which is why "the roofer said it was fine" is not actually an answer, the manufacturer's bulletin is. GAF's own technical bulletin on fiberglass asphalt shingles states there is no practical lower or upper temperature limit for installation as long as proper precautions are taken, but for easiest handling it recommends staying above 40°F, and it advises storing shingle bundles in a heated space above 70°F for at least 24 hours before a cold-weather install. CertainTeed's installation sheets warn that cool temperatures slow or delay the factory sealant and that shingles must be warm enough before bending them into a hip, ridge, or valley, or they can crack. Atlas's own warranty language addresses this directly: shingles installed in fall or winter without adequate surface temperatures may never self-seal, and the installer is expected to hand seal them at the time of installation rather than wait and hope.

In practice, that means our crews watch the forecast, not the calendar. A dry, calm day in the 30s with sun on the roof behaves differently than an overcast day in the low 40s, and a project manager on site makes that call, not a sales script.

What Is Hand-Sealing and Why Does Winter Require It?

Every architectural shingle has a strip of factory-applied adhesive on the back that bonds to the shingle below it once sun and warmth activate it. That bond is what keeps shingles locked down in wind. In cold weather, that strip can sit dormant for weeks, so a crew hand seals instead: a quarter-size dab of approved asphalt roofing cement under each tab, pressed down by hand, shingle by shingle, across the whole roof. GAF specifically names this as standard cold-weather practice in its own technical bulletins, and says a roof installed this way, following its cool-weather instructions, keeps its warranty intact. Skipping hand sealing to save a few hours on a cold day is how a roof ends up with shingles that lift in the first windstorm after installation, long before the adhesive strip ever would have bonded on its own.

What Will a Roofer Not Do in a Michigan Winter?

A contractor who works through the winter honestly should be upfront about the limits, not just the capabilities. Here is what we will not do, and why:

  • Walk a roof covered in snow or ice. It is unsafe for the crew and the foot traffic damages shingles that are already brittle in the cold.
  • Leave a torn-off section open overnight. We only open as much roof as we can dry-in and shingle before the crew leaves for the day, so decking is never exposed to an overnight freeze or snowfall.
  • Shingle in active rain or over wet or frozen decking. Trapped moisture under new shingles causes problems long after the crew is gone, so a roof in the rain gets tarped and the shingling waits for a dry, better day.
  • Force a tight weave into a valley on a very cold day. ARMA's own guidance recommends open metal valleys over woven or closed-cut valleys in cold weather specifically because those require bending the shingle, which is when it is most likely to crack.
  • Call a tarp a finished repair. If conditions do not allow the permanent fix that day, we say so and schedule the real repair for the next suitable window instead of pretending a tarp is the end of the job.

Is It Cheaper to Replace a Roof in Winter?

Materials do not cost less in January, and we do not publish a winter discount, so be skeptical of any contractor who tells you winter pricing is automatically lower. What is genuinely different is demand. On our own 2026 call data, January brought us 19 new inquiries and February 39, our two lightest months of the year, compared to 140 in April alone. We cover the full month-by-month breakdown in our roofer scheduling guide. Fewer homeowners calling means more open slots on the schedule and more unhurried attention per job, not a lower invoice. If your roof is already failing, that quieter season can also mean the difference between getting on the schedule this month versus waiting behind the entire spring rush.

How Long Does a Winter Roof Replacement Take?

Once a crew is on your roof, a straightforward single-story job is still usually a one-day install, the same as summer. What changes is the margin around that day. Shorter daylight hours mean less usable light to start and finish in, morning frost sometimes needs to burn off before work can safely begin, and a crew may lose part of a day waiting out an unexpected squall. A job that would wrap in one day in July can stretch to two in January for a roof of the same size and complexity, simply because the workable hours are fewer.

Should You Wait Until Spring, or Replace the Roof Now?

If your roof is sound and you are just weighing timing, waiting for better weather is a reasonable choice. But a few situations make winter the right call, not just an acceptable one: an active leak that is already getting into the attic or ceiling, missing or torn-off shingles exposing bare decking, a roof already past 20 years old heading into a season of ice and snow load, or an insurance claim with a repair deadline attached to it. In any of those cases, the damage from waiting usually costs more than any inconvenience of a winter install. Our ice dam guide covers a related winter problem, attic heat melting snow that refreezes at the eaves, that a failing roof often makes worse. For roofs that are holding on but need attention before the next storm, see our winter roof prep checklist for what to handle now versus what can wait.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature is too cold to install a roof in Michigan?

There is no single industry-wide cutoff. GAF's technical bulletin states there is no practical lower temperature limit for fiberglass shingles when proper precautions are taken, but recommends staying above 40°F for easiest handling. CertainTeed and Atlas both require hand sealing and extra care bending shingles below the temperature where their factory sealant activates. The honest answer depends on the shingle brand, so ask your contractor which manufacturer's cold-weather instructions they follow.

Do roofers hand-seal shingles when it is cold?

Yes. Below the temperature where a shingle's factory adhesive strip activates on its own, installers apply a quarter-size dab of approved asphalt roofing cement under each tab by hand. GAF documents this as standard cold-weather practice that keeps the manufacturer warranty intact, as long as it is done correctly across the whole roof, not skipped to save time.

Is a winter roof replacement cheaper in Michigan?

Not on materials, and we do not publish a winter discount. What is different is demand: January and February are our lightest months for new inquiries (19 and 39 calls in 2026, versus 140 in April), which generally means faster scheduling and more unhurried time per job rather than a lower invoice.

Will installing a roof in cold weather void the shingle warranty?

No, as long as the manufacturer's cold-weather installation instructions are followed, including hand sealing where required. GAF states explicitly that its warranty is not affected by cool-weather installation when its application instructions are followed. The risk is a contractor skipping those steps, not the cold weather itself.

How long does a roof replacement take in winter compared to summer?

The install itself is similar once a crew starts, often one day for a straightforward single-story roof. The difference is the margin around that day: shorter daylight, morning frost that needs to clear, and weather delays can stretch a one-day summer job into two days in January for the same roof.
