Atlas Pinnacle Black Shadow reads as a true black roof from the street, with enough dark gray in the blend that it has depth instead of looking painted on. Up close, the tabs run from charcoal to near-black, so the roof keeps its dimension in flat winter light and hides pollen and dirt better than any lighter color. It is the shingle color we install more than any other, and you can see it on whole roofs, in Michigan light, on our Atlas Black Shadow photo page, every one with its published price. Written by Aaron Scott, licensed Michigan residential builder and owner of Roofing Army, an Atlas Pro+ Diamond contractor.
What does Atlas Pinnacle Black Shadow look like from the street?
From the curb, Black Shadow is black. On the white colonial at 2251 Columbia Road in Berkley, the main slopes read flat black in full sun while the ridge and dormer cheeks catch the light and go a half step lighter, which keeps the roof from looking like a sheet of rubber. On the ranch at 688 North Hagadorn Street in South Lyon, shot through a big maple, the shaded sections drop to near-black and the sunlit sections show the charcoal mixed through the blend.
Up close, each tab is a mix of black and dark gray granules, scattered rather than striped. Atlas does not publish a granule recipe for Black Shadow, so that description is ours, from the drone photos we shoot on every job. Atlas does say to make final color selections with full size shingles, because blends vary from shingle to shingle, and we agree.

What siding, brick and trim colors pair with Black Shadow?
General color guidance, not a rule. Black is the easiest shingle color to pair because it does not argue with anything:
- White or light gray siding is the classic match; the Berkley and South Lyon roofs above show why.
- Red or orange brick, on the postwar ranches of Berkley, Oxford and Shelby Township, looks cleaner under black than under a brown that competes with it.
- Tan, cream and sage siding all work. Black reads as a neutral, so the siding carries the color.
- Gray siding close in value to charcoal is the one pairing to test with a full shingle first; mid-dark gray walls under a mid-dark gray roof can go flat.
We do not install siding or paint exteriors; that work goes to our referral partner The Exterior Painters (see our referral partners page). Our guide on how to choose a shingle color covers drip edge, trim and HOA approvals, so we will not repeat them here.
How does Black Shadow compare with other Atlas colors?
Atlas lists Black Shadow alongside several other dark Pinnacle Pristine colors: Weathered Shadow, Midnight Lake, Hearthstone, Pewter and Coastal Granite, which Atlas calls "a deep gray that's anything but neutral." The one we have installed often enough to photograph on many homes is Atlas Pewter, a medium gray two full steps lighter than Black Shadow and the first alternative to look at if black feels heavy on your house. For warmth instead of gray, Atlas Burnt Hickory and Atlas Weathered Wood are the browns we see most. Every Atlas color we have installed is on the shingle colors page.

What are the GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration equivalents?
Color names are not standards, so "equivalent" means the nearest name in each line, not an identical blend. If you are comparing bids, this is the row to line up:
| Line | Nearest color | What the manufacturer says |
|---|---|---|
| Atlas Pinnacle Pristine | Black Shadow | No published blend description; 3M Scotchgard Protector against algae streaks |
| GAF Timberline HDZ | Charcoal | One of nine High Definition colors sold nationwide; GAF's 2026 Bold Definition color Midnight Mesa is described as its bolder take on Charcoal |
| Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration | Onyx Black | Owens Corning describes it as a black made from a mix of dark gray and black granules |
If heat is the concern, GAF also sells a reflective Charcoal in its Timberline HDZ RS line, which GAF markets as the darkest highly reflective shingle color available. We install GAF and Owens Corning on request and price them next to Atlas on the same quote; for the differences beyond color, see our Atlas vs GAF vs CertainTeed comparison and our Owens Corning vs GAF guide.
Does a black roof make a Michigan attic hotter?
Yes, measurably, and it matters less than ventilation. In July 2000 the Florida Solar Energy Center monitored six identical side-by-side homes in Fort Myers with different roofs. The dark-shingle control attic ran 40 degrees F above outdoor air at the peak summer hour, while highly reflective white roofs kept the attic no warmer than outdoors. The same study measured a dark gray shingle at 8.2 percent solar reflectance and a white shingle at 24 percent, yet the white shingles saved only 3 to 5 percent on cooling. A 2002 Oak Ridge National Laboratory paper measured a dark roof surface at more than 75 degrees F above the air on a sunny day, against about 5 degrees F for a highly reflective one.
The U.S. Department of Energy says reflective-roof savings are greatest in hot and warm climates and that a cool roof "may increase the need for heating energy in winter." Atlas's own color guidance says darker colors may be more energy efficient in cold climates. We heat for far more of the year than we cool.
Our position, from the attics we actually crawl: the hot attics in Southeast Michigan have blocked soffits, no intake, or a ridge vent with nothing feeding it. We see light roofs over cooked attics and black roofs over cool ones; the difference is airflow every time. That is why a ventilation analysis is part of every estimate we write, and why attic ventilation deserves your attention more than reflectance does. Our roof ventilation guide explains intake, exhaust and baffles.

How does Black Shadow age and resist algae streaks?
Pinnacle Pristine shingles carry 3M Scotchgard Protector, which Atlas describes as copper-containing granules, blended at a minimum of 10 percent, that release copper ions slowly to help prevent the black streaks caused by blue-green algae. Atlas backs it with a Lifetime Algae Resistance Limited Warranty on one condition that trips people up: the roof must be finished with Atlas hip and ridge shingles that also carry Scotchgard Protector. Look for that line on any Atlas quote; on ours, the hip and ridge is Atlas's own.
Black is also the most forgiving color if streaking ever started, since dark stains on a black roof are close to invisible. On the old black roofs we tear off, the color has usually gone a shade softer and grayer where surface granules have thinned; the shingle fails from age, heat and poor ventilation, not from fading.
What have real Black Shadow roofs cost in Michigan?
Five Black Shadow roofs we installed, from our job gallery, where every project is published with its real price and drone photos. Each address links to the full project.
| Address | City | Roof size | Price | Per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2226 Judy Lane | Shelby Township | 2,274 sq ft | $22,746.56 | $10.00 |
| 2251 Columbia Road | Berkley | 1,567 sq ft | $13,968.47 | $8.91 |
| 26 West Street | Oxford | 1,440 sq ft | $11,904.27 | $8.27 |
| 688 North Hagadorn Street | South Lyon | 1,949 sq ft | $16,369.34 | $8.40 |
| 8 South Glaspie St | Oxford | 2,480 sq ft | $15,689.90 | $6.33 |
Reading the table: roof area, not living area; the last column is price divided by roof area. The spread from $6.33 to $10.00 comes from pitch, valleys, layers torn off and decking repairs, which is why the largest roof here was not the most expensive. Our Michigan roof replacement cost guide covers each factor, with city breakdowns for Oxford, Berkley and Shelby Township.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Atlas Pinnacle Black Shadow a true black or a dark gray?
From the street it reads as black. Up close the blend mixes black and dark gray granules, which gives the roof some dimension in flat light instead of looking like a solid sheet. Atlas does not publish a granule recipe for the color, so see it on a whole roof before deciding; our photo page shows every Black Shadow roof we have published.
Does Atlas Black Shadow come with Scotchgard Protector?
Yes. Pinnacle Pristine shingles, including Black Shadow, carry 3M Scotchgard Protector, which Atlas describes as copper-containing granules that release copper ions slowly to help prevent black algae streaks. Atlas's Lifetime Algae Resistance Limited Warranty applies only when the roof is finished with Atlas hip and ridge shingles that also carry Scotchgard Protector, so check for that on your quote.
Will a black roof raise my cooling bill in Michigan?
A little, and ventilation matters far more. Florida Solar Energy Center testing measured a dark-shingle attic at 40 degrees F above outdoor air at the summer peak, but white shingles in the same test saved only 3 to 5 percent on cooling. The Department of Energy notes reflective roofs save the most in hot climates and can add to winter heating needs. In Michigan, balanced intake and exhaust ventilation decides how hot your attic gets.
What is the GAF or Owens Corning equivalent of Atlas Black Shadow?
The nearest names are GAF Timberline HDZ Charcoal and Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Onyx Black, which Owens Corning describes as a black made from dark gray and black granules. They are not identical blends, so compare full shingles side by side. We install all three lines and will price them on the same quote.
