Atlas Pinnacle Pewter is a medium gray roof, not a black one and not a silver one. From the street it reads as a soft, cool gray with visible light and dark tabs, and in full sun it picks up a faint blue cast. Up close the blend runs from light gray to charcoal with no single granule color dominating. It is the second most common color we install, and the Atlas Pewter photo page shows every roof we have published in the color, with the price of each. Written by Aaron Scott, licensed Michigan residential builder and owner of Roofing Army, an Atlas Pro+ Diamond contractor.
What does Atlas Pinnacle Pewter look like at street distance and up close?
At street distance Pewter is the gray most people picture when they say "gray roof." On the ranch at 540 Longford Drive in Rochester, shot on an overcast day, the whole roof reads as one even medium gray with lighter tabs scattered across each course, which keeps it from looking like a flat sheet. On the large two-story at 5766 Strawberry Circle in Commerce Township, photographed in bright sun against tan stucco, the same shingle reads cooler and a touch bluer, with the shaded slopes dropping toward charcoal.
Within arm's reach the blend separates into light gray, mid gray and near-black granules. Atlas does not publish a granule-by-granule description of Pewter, so that is what we see on our own roofs, not a spec. Atlas says sample boards and photos "should only be used as a guideline" and that final selections should be made with full size shingles. We would add that Pewter changes more with the weather than a black or brown roof does, so look at it on a gray day and a sunny one.

Which siding, brick and trim colors go with Pewter?
General guidance, not a rule. A medium gray roof is the second most forgiving color after black, with one exception:
- Tan, beige and cream siding or stucco is where Pewter looks best to us. Strawberry Circle is the example: warm walls, cool roof, white trim, nothing fights.
- Painted or whitewashed brick in white, off-white or light gray, like the Longford Drive ranch, gives a quiet, modern result.
- Red brick works because gray is neutral, but the result is cooler and more formal than a brown roof on the same brick.
- The exception: gray siding in the same value as Pewter can go flat. Go lighter or darker on the walls, or pick Black Shadow for the roof instead.
We do not install siding or paint exteriors; our referral partner The Exterior Painters handles that work (see our referral partners page). Our guide to choosing a shingle color covers trim, HOA approvals and sample chips.
How does Pewter compare with Atlas's other grays?
The Pinnacle Pristine palette has more grays than any other family. Besides Pewter, Atlas lists Hearthstone, Weathered Shadow, Oyster Shell, Black Shadow and Coastal Granite, which Atlas calls "a deep gray that's anything but neutral." We have installed Pewter and Black Shadow enough to photograph both on many homes; Pewter is clearly the lighter, and Black Shadow reads as black from the street. A small ranch with light siding usually looks better under Pewter; a two-story with white trim can carry Black Shadow. The shingle colors page only lists colors we have actually put on a roof.

What are the GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration equivalents of Pewter?
Here is where naming gets confusing. GAF sells a Timberline HDZ color called Pewter Gray, and homeowners regularly assume it is the same shingle as Atlas Pewter. It is not: same word, different manufacturer, different granule blend. Confirm the manufacturer and line on your quote, not just the color word.
| Line | Nearest color | What the manufacturer says |
|---|---|---|
| Atlas Pinnacle Pristine | Pewter | No published blend description; 3M Scotchgard Protector; Lifetime Algae Resistance Limited Warranty with Atlas hip and ridge |
| GAF Timberline HDZ | Pewter Gray | One of GAF's nine nationwide High Definition colors; GAF's 2026 Bold Definition color Cliffside is described as its bolder take on Pewter Gray |
| Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration | Estate Gray | Owens Corning describes it as a medium gray made from a mix of light, medium and dark greenish gray granules |
That "greenish" in the Estate Gray description is real: it can read slightly warmer than Pewter next to the same brick. We install GAF and Owens Corning on request and price them against Atlas on the same five-quote estimate; for the differences that are not about color, see our Owens Corning Duration vs GAF Timberline HDZ guide and our Atlas vs GAF vs CertainTeed comparison.
Is a gray roof cooler than a black roof in Michigan?
Slightly, and in our climate the difference is not worth choosing a color over. The U.S. Department of Energy says a reflective cool-color roof can cut cooling costs by 5 to 20 percent, with savings "greatest in hot and warm climates," and warns that a cool roof "may increase the need for heating energy in winter." In Fort Myers, Florida, the Florida Solar Energy Center's 2000 side-by-side test measured a dark-shingle attic at 40 degrees F above outdoor air at the summer peak, with lighter shingles and terra cotta tile landing between the dark and white extremes. Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers reported that the roof, attic and air conditioning ductwork together accounted for about 25 percent of the cooling load in those Florida homes.
A medium gray like Pewter is a mid-tone, so it lands between those results. But Michigan is a heating climate, and Atlas's own color guidance notes that darker colors may be more energy efficient in cold climates. Our position after years of crawling attics in Oakland and Macomb County: shingle color is a rounding error next to airflow. A gray roof over blocked soffits will cook, and a black roof over balanced intake and ridge exhaust will not. That is why every estimate we write includes a ventilation analysis, and why we would steer you to our attic ventilation page before a lighter shingle. Our roof ventilation guide covers intake, exhaust and baffles.

How does Pewter age and hold up against algae streaks?
This matters more on gray than on black. Blue-green algae leaves dark streaks, and on a medium gray roof they are visible from the road within a few years on a shaded north slope. That is the main reason we reach for Pinnacle Pristine in this color: it carries 3M Scotchgard Protector, which Atlas describes as copper-containing granules, at least 10 percent of the blend, that release copper ions slowly to help prevent those streaks. Atlas says the technology has protected over 2 million homes and backs it with a Lifetime Algae Resistance Limited Warranty, on one condition: the roof must be finished with Atlas hip and ridge shingles that also carry Scotchgard Protector. Our Atlas quotes spec that hip and ridge. On the aged gray roofs we tear off, the color is usually a little lighter and more uniform than new because the darker granules have thinned; what ends the roof is heat and age, and heat is a ventilation problem.
What have real Pewter roofs cost in Michigan?
Four Pewter roofs we installed, from our job gallery, where every project carries its real price and drone photos. Each address links to the full project.
| Address | City | Roof size | Price | Per sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2164 Lawndale Avenue | West Bloomfield | 2,729 sq ft | $21,300.69 | $7.81 |
| 540 Longford Drive | Rochester | 3,030 sq ft | $18,440.16 | $6.09 |
| 5766 Strawberry Circle | Commerce Township | 3,736 sq ft | $19,725.40 | $5.28 |
| 9888 Bellcrest Boulevard | Fenton | 2,766 sq ft | $11,736.92 | $4.24 |
Reading the table: roof area, not living area; the last column is price divided by roof area. These are larger roofs than most of our Black Shadow jobs, which is part of why the per-foot numbers run lower; a larger roof spreads fixed costs like the permit over more area. The spread from $4.24 to $7.81 comes from pitch, valleys, layers removed and decking. Our Michigan roof replacement cost guide explains each factor, the Rochester cost breakdown has local numbers, and West Bloomfield and Commerce Township are covered on our Oakland County page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Atlas Pewter the same color as GAF Pewter Gray?
No. They share a word, not a blend. Atlas Pewter is a Pinnacle Pristine color and GAF Pewter Gray is a Timberline HDZ color, made by different manufacturers with different granules. They are in the same medium gray family but will not match side by side, so confirm the manufacturer and line on your quote, not just the color name.
Does Atlas Pewter show algae streaks?
A medium gray roof shows dark algae streaks more readily than a black one, which is why Scotchgard Protector matters on this color. Pinnacle Pristine carries 3M Scotchgard copper granules and Atlas's Lifetime Algae Resistance Limited Warranty, provided the roof is finished with Atlas hip and ridge that also carries Scotchgard Protector.
Will a gray roof keep my Michigan attic cooler than a black one?
Marginally. Florida Solar Energy Center testing found lighter shingles land between dark and white roofs for attic temperature, and the Department of Energy says reflective roofs save the most in hot climates while adding to winter heating. In Michigan, balanced soffit intake and ridge exhaust control attic heat far more than shingle color does.
What does an Atlas Pewter roof cost in Michigan?
Our published Pewter roofs ran from $11,736.92 for a 2,766 square foot roof in Fenton to $21,300.69 for a 2,729 square foot roof in West Bloomfield, with a 3,030 square foot Rochester roof at $18,440.16. The color does not set the price; size, pitch, layers and decking do. Every job is published with its price in our job gallery.
