Best Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles in Michigan (2026)

By Aaron Scott|12 min read|

The best Class 4 shingles for a Michigan roof in 2026 are the SBS-modified architectural lines: GAF Timberline AS II, CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex and Owens Corning Duration FLEX, with Malarkey Legacy right with them. All four are UL 2218 Class 4 and rated Good on the IBHS 2025 hail scorecard, and rubberized asphalt stays flexible through freeze-thaw. Atlas StormMaster Shake and Pinnacle Impact are Class 4 too and the two we quote most, but they trail the SBS group on IBHS scores. Written by Aaron Scott, licensed Michigan residential builder and owner of Roofing Army; we install Atlas, GAF, CertainTeed and Owens Corning.

What does a Class 4 impact rating actually mean?

UL 2218 is a lab test, not a storm. A steel ball is dropped on a new shingle, the same spot is hit twice, and the back is inspected for cracks. Four ball sizes set the classes, from a 1 1/4 inch ball dropped 12 feet for Class 1 up to a 2 inch ball dropped 20 feet for Class 4. Every manufacturer calls Class 4 the highest rating for an asphalt shingle, and every one says in the fine print that it does not guarantee storm performance and that hail damage is still excluded from the warranty. GAF, Owens Corning and IKO state that outright.

FM 4473 uses the same classes but fires ice balls instead. IBHS, the insurance industry's research lab, goes further: it buys shingles at retail, fires lab-made hailstones from a CO2 gun, and scores dents and ridges, tears and granule loss on a 0 to 10 scale, with Good starting at 6.0. In the November 2025 round, 23 products made the card: 18 Good, 5 Marginal, none Excellent, and IBHS does not recommend a Marginal product where hail falls. That score is the only independent number in the table, so it drives our ranking.

Which Class 4 shingles are best for Michigan? Ranked

Every spec comes from the manufacturer's current product page or data sheet; every score comes from the IBHS 2025 scorecard. Wind figures are warranty terms with conditions, not test results. Malarkey and IKO are included because you will see them on other quotes; we do not install them.

1. GAF Timberline AS II

The Class 4 version of the most-installed shingle in the country, made with GAF's own SBS-modified asphalt, with the best tear score on the 2025 card at 9.6. WindProven has no wind speed cap, but only with four qualifying GAF accessories, so check the quote. GAF notes the Class 4 rating applies only to bundles whose wrapper carries the UL 2218 Class 4 statement. Keep a wrapper.

2. Malarkey Legacy Scotchgard

Malarkey's NEX rubberized asphalt earned the best dents-and-ridges score of any Class 4 architectural on the card, 8.6, and dents are the damage we actually see on Michigan roofs. Lifetime Scotchgard algae warranty, 20-year non-prorated period. The 130 mph tier needs a Malarkey certified contractor, which we are not; it is here for honesty, not because we can sell it.

3. CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex

CertainTeed's SBS line: 9.7 on granule loss, the best on the card, but 4.5 on dents, the weakest of the top four. CertainTeed says the SBS formula keeps it from cracking at temperatures as low as 0 degrees F, the cold claim that matters here, and the 30-year StreakFighter warranty is the longest of the SBS group.

4. Owens Corning Duration FLEX

The only shingle here that pairs SBS asphalt with a woven nailing strip, and the only one rated Class 4 under both UL 2218 and FM 4473. Owens Corning lists ImpactRidge caps to complete a Class 4 system. Supply has rolled out plant by plant, so we confirm availability before it goes in a package.

5. Atlas StormMaster Shake

The Class 4 shingle we quote most. In our CRM, across 826 quotes written from December 2025 to September 2026, StormMaster appears as a line item 155 times, because it goes in the five-option package on most replacements. It is a designer shake profile with a 6 inch exposure, Atlas's Core4 polymer blend, a lifetime Scotchgard algae warranty, and flexibility Atlas rates as enhanced down to 0 degrees, and as an Atlas Pro+ Diamond contractor we can register the Signature Select system warranty behind it. The honest part: it scored 6.8 on the IBHS card, 8.3 on granule loss but 4.7 on dents, a full point behind the SBS architecturals. If hail is the only reason you are upgrading, AS II or NorthGate is stronger. If you want the shake look and the Atlas system warranty in one shingle, this is it.

6. Atlas Pinnacle Impact

The Class 4 sibling of Pinnacle Pristine, our default shingle, which is itself Class 3: same 42 inch HP42 format, same Scotchgard lifetime algae warranty. Atlas's own flyer rates its flexibility as standard, not enhanced like StormMaster, and its 6.6 sits just above Pristine's 6.0. It is the easiest Class 4 upgrade if you already like the Pinnacle look and want the discount paperwork.

7. IKO Nordic and 8. Malarkey Vista

Both are polymer-modified with Class 4 paperwork, and both landed in the Marginal band (Nordic 5.6, Vista AR 5.2 with a 3.3 on tears). IKO's own literature says its rating exists to help homeowners obtain an insurance reduction and is not a guarantee against hail. If a contractor quotes either as a hail upgrade, ask to see the IBHS card.

SBS-modified vs mat-reinforced: why it matters in freeze-thaw

There are two ways to pass the steel ball test. The older way leaves the asphalt alone and bonds a reinforcing fabric or backing to the shingle so a crack cannot spread through the mat; the shingle still bruises and sheds granules, it just holds together. The newer way blends rubber polymers into the asphalt itself. SBS is styrene-butadiene-styrene; Malarkey's NEX and Atlas's Core4 are their own blends doing the same job. The shingle becomes pliable, so a hailstone dents and rebounds instead of fracturing the mat.

Michigan is where that shows. Standard asphalt goes brittle in a January cold snap, and freeze-thaw on a north slope in Oxford or Rochester Hills works the shingle daily from November to April. A rubberized shingle stays flexible at the temperatures CertainTeed and Atlas publish. One caution so you do not overbuy: on the 2025 card, standard Owens Corning Duration scored 8.0 and standard CertainTeed Landmark 6.9, above several Class 4 products. The class is what the insurance form asks for; the score tells you how the shingle behaved under lab hail.

How do Michigan insurance discounts for impact-resistant roofs work?

Carrier by carrier. We could not find a Michigan rule that requires a credit, unlike Texas, where regulators publish one. From the carriers' own pages: State Farm lists Michigan among the states where its roofing discount is offered, says impact-resistant products such as Class 4 shingles may qualify, requires a roofing certification form, and will not credit a roof laid over an old one. Farmers says impact-resistant shingles may save you money, with terms that vary by state. Auto-Owners, the Lansing-based carrier, publishes a wind mitigation discount but does not name roofing materials. None publish a Michigan percentage we would stake a number on, so we leave it out.

  • Call your agent before the shingles are ordered. Is the credit offered, which test do they accept (UL 2218, FM 4473 or both), and what is it worth in dollars on your policy?
  • Get the carrier's form. Most use a roofing certification form with a contractor section; we complete ours at the end of the job.
  • Match the whole roof. Ask for Class 4 hip and ridge caps too. Owens Corning and IKO both describe a complete Class 4 system that includes the ridge.
  • Keep three things: the invoice naming the exact product, a bundle wrapper with the UL 2218 Class 4 statement, and the manufacturer's spec sheet.
  • Ask about cosmetic damage. In some states, carriers pair the credit with an endorsement that removes coverage for cosmetic hail dents. We have not seen a Michigan version; ask whether the credit changes anything else.

Is the Class 4 upcharge worth it? A break-even test

We have not published a Class 4 job in our job gallery yet, so we will not quote a national average for the upcharge. The number that matters is on your own quote: the Class 4 line minus the standard architectural line in the same package, with everything under the shingle identical. Divide that by the yearly premium reduction your agent quoted, and you have the years until the credit alone pays for the shingle. If the upcharge were $2,000 and the credit $150 a year (illustrative, use your own), that is about 13 years, which only works if you will be in the house that long. Then add what people miss: if the roof shrugs off one storm that would have been a claim on a standard roof, you keep your hail deductible; our hail deductible calculator shows what yours is worth. Finally, weigh the non-insurance reasons: a lifetime algae warranty, a shake profile, cold flexibility on a roof you will keep 25 years. If none apply and the break-even is longer than you will own the home, pick a standard line from our brands page and put the money into ventilation.

How much hail does Michigan actually get?

Enough to matter, not enough to make Class 4 automatic. On September 2, 2026, the National Weather Service logged 1 inch hail at Otter Lake and more than 2 inch hail near Imlay City and Capac; our Lapeer County hail storm guide covers what that does to a standard shingle, and our Lapeer crews are still inspecting roofs from it. The same system pushed 60 to 70 mph winds across Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties (Oakland County wind storm guide). A 2 inch stone is the Class 4 test size, so that storm is the right mental picture. If a storm has already hit, start with our 48-hour hail checklist and storm damage page; inspections are free.

How to get a Class 4 option priced

Every replacement we quote comes with five written options at different price points. Ask for a Class 4 line as one of them and we will put AS II, NorthGate ClimateFlex, Duration FLEX or StormMaster Shake next to the standard shingle so the upcharge is visible on one page. Everything under the shingle stays the same: full tear-off, 6 feet of ice and water shield, in-house crews, a project manager on site, no deposit, and our 50-year workmanship warranty. Browse colors on real homes, compare the standard lines in Atlas Pinnacle vs Timberline HDZ vs Landmark and Duration vs Timberline HDZ, and start on our roof replacement page. Financing is available on every package.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Class 4 shingle for Michigan?

On independent lab data, GAF Timberline AS II, with a 7.9 Good rating on the IBHS 2025 hail scorecard and SBS-modified asphalt that stays flexible in cold. Malarkey Legacy (7.8), CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex (7.7) and Owens Corning Duration FLEX (7.5) are close behind. Atlas StormMaster Shake (6.8) is the Class 4 shingle we quote most because of its shake profile, lifetime algae warranty and the Atlas system warranty, but it trails the SBS group on hail scores.

Do Class 4 shingles lower homeowners insurance in Michigan?

They can, but it depends on the carrier. State Farm lists Michigan among the states where its roofing discount is available for impact-resistant products such as Class 4 shingles, requires a roofing certification form, and excludes overlays. Farmers says impact-resistant shingles may save you money, with terms varying by state. We found no published Michigan percentage we would rely on, so ask your agent for the dollar figure before the roof is ordered.

Are Class 4 shingles hail-proof?

No. UL 2218 Class 4 means a new shingle survived a 2 inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet, twice in the same spot, without cracking on the back. GAF, Owens Corning and IKO all state that hail damage is still excluded from the shingle warranty. A Class 4 shingle is built to resist cracking under impact, but a big enough stone will still dent it and knock granules loose, which is why the IBHS score matters as much as the class.

How much more do Class 4 shingles cost?

The shingle is a minority of a replacement invoice, so the upcharge is a line item, not a different price class. We do not publish a national average because we have not yet published a Class 4 job in our gallery. Ask for a Class 4 option as one of your five quotes and the difference will be printed next to the standard shingle with everything else identical.

Is Atlas Pinnacle Pristine a Class 4 shingle?

No. Atlas rates Pinnacle Pristine as UL 2218 Class 3. The Class 4 version with the same wide HP42 format and Scotchgard algae protection is Pinnacle Impact, and Atlas's designer-profile Class 4 shingle is StormMaster Shake. Both are UL 2218 Class 4 and both earned a Good rating on the IBHS 2025 scorecard.
